Common Characteristics of Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is among the many diseases caused by herpes virus, a family of viruses with five different strains afflicting humans with a variety of diseases that include chicken pox, shingles and mononucleosis. The most common strain, herpes simplex, has two variations: Type 1, which is usually associated with cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth; and Type 2, which generally infects the genitalia, buttocks and thighs with painful sores and blisters. The two types are not confined to these areas, however; studies have found Type 1 herpes virus in genital sores and Type 2 viruses in mouth and throat infections. Other parts of the body also may be affected, including the hands, eyes, brain and spinal cord.
Although herpes viruses cause a wide variety of illnesses and have been studied extensively for the last few decades, they remain a medical enigma. Once they invade the body, herpes viruses remain for life although they may be dormant most of the time. some, such as the varicella-zoster strain, may have different manifestations. This variety causes chicken pox in children, after which the virus remains dormant in the nervous system. In most people, the virus never again becomes active, but for unknown reasons, in others it may erupt into painful attacks of herpes zoster, more commonly known as shingles. Similarly, herpes simplex also goes through recurring cycles of infectious activity and dormancy.

General Information About Genital Herpes
How Can You Tell if Someone Has Genital Herpes?
Do you take a good look at the person? Do you ask and look straight in their eyes? Do you inquire about their sex lives? Well, my answer is no, maybe and maybe.
It may be a good idea to ask someone if they're aware of having genital herpes. The more sexual partners a person has had in their lives, the more likely they're to be infected by herpes. But these methods are quite insufficient. Did you know that the majority of people who have genital or oral herpes are not aware of it? So how do you explain that? Simple, many oral or genital herpes infected people just don't have any herpes symptoms, others have some symptoms which are mild enough to confuse them with a rash or a mosquito bite or anything that may cause, redness, swelling, itching, burning and blisters, and some may not even know what herpes symptoms are.
The fact that somebody doesn't have or recognize herpes symptoms doesn't mean they don't have it. About 25% of the US population is infected with genital herpes, with women being more affected than men. Studies have shown that the vast majority (80%-90%) of people who have genital herpes have not been diagnosed with the condition.

What Are Genital Herpes Sores & How Are They Diagnosed?
Do you suffer from genital herpes sores? If so, what are you doing to manage them? Genital herpes is a disease that affects more than one in five Americans. It continues to grow rapidly, affecting close to another million people a year. Unfortunately, lack of caution in the bedroom and lack of education about the disease leaves anyone and everyone open to becoming affected.
The herpes virus is broken down into two main types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Even though the first type generally affects the oral area, both types can still cause a genital herpes sore to appear. However, it is HSV-2 that is the leading cause of outbreaks.
Genital herpes is transmitted when two people engage in sexual activity such as vaginal and anal intercourse, as well as oral sex. Herpes can also be transmitted if broken skin comes in contact with a genital herpes sore. Sores tend to appear between 2 to 10 days after sexual activity. Staying educated about the disease and being aware of the partners you engage in sexual activity with, will allow you to learn how to manage your outbreaks effectively.

Does Facial Herpes Differ From Oral Herpes?
Facial herpes is an extremely common condition that affects about millions of people throughout the world and at about 80% of the American population. It is usually caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1), however some people suffer from facial herpes due to contact with herpes simplex type 2 virus, though this is usually the cause of genital herpes. The condition usually affects areas such as the nose, face and eyes. Many people who have been infected with the virus will never show any signs or symptoms and may not even be aware of having it.
Ocular Herpes-What Is It?
A HSV infection of the eye or ocular herpes attacks the cornea of the infected person and in severe cases, may lead to partial or complete blindness.
Herpes keratitis affects the top layer of the cornea. Most cases do not leave scarring and will heal leaving the persons' sight in tact. It will also attack the iris and/or surrounding tissue resulting in "iridocyclitis." Retinal infections will occur as well affecting the retina and back of the eye.

Understanding the Herpes Virus at the Cell Level
The word "herpes" conjures up different images for different people. Some see herpes as an ugly and annoying cold sore or blister that periodically appears on or around the lips. Others see herpes as a feared sexually transmitted disease that, once you have contracted, you have to suffer with for the rest of your life. Of course both of these images do represent the term "herpes" quite accurately for many people throughout the world, but medically speaking herpes is also appropriately applied to several lesser known afflictions. These conditions include herpes inside the mouth (herpes gingivostomatitis), herpes of the throat (herpes pharyngitis), herpes of the eye (herpes keratitis), herpes of the brain (herpes encephalitis), herpes transmitted to newborn infants (neonatal herpes), chickenpox (varicella-zoster), mono (mononucleosis) and shingles (herpes-zoster). All of these conditions are caused by one of the two closely related herpes viruses known as herpes simplex virus type 1 and herpes simplex virus type 2.

Home Treatment Herpes - Top Home Treatment for Herpes
Herpes is caused by the herpes virus. There are many different variations of the herpes virus. The most common being hsv1 (herpes simplex virus 1) ; and hsv2 (herpes simplex virus 1) .
Hsv1 causes what is commonly known as "Oral herpes" . The most common physical form of hsv1 is colds sores. Statistics indicate that 90 % of adults have hsv1.
Hsv2 is the most common STD (sexually transmitted disease) among adults in the world. Commonly known as Genital Herpes, this disease is believed to be incurable; however there are treatment options available that can suppress the herpes outbreaks .Even though herpes is incurable, with proper medication all herpes symptoms (outbreaks etc) can be cured. This is why some people only experience outbreaks once every several years. And in some cases the herpes symptoms are cured for life.

How to Treat Genital Herpes Naturally - A Safe, Effective Herpes Treatment Discussed
What is Genital Herpes and how can I find a natural treatment for genital herpes which I can reply on?
Genital Herpes is an extremely common condition which is highly contagious. So who gets Genital herpes? Genital herpes can affect men and woman of any age. It is normally contracted through sexual intercourse and can be passed on from a man to a woman or visa versa. the Genital herpes is a virus which resides in the body (herpesvirus hominus). The two types of the virus are Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV1) which infects the mouth. This type of herpes is known as a cold sore or fever blister. Herpes Simplex 2 (genital herpes) affects the genital and anal area in men and woman. Herpes, specifically Genital herpes is an STD which is highly contagious. If you aware that you have genital herpes, you must let your partners know.

Herpes Transmission - How Does One Avoid Getting The Herpes Virus?
Herpes transmission can occur in various ways. The two most common ways are by kissing and by vaginal intercourse, however, it doesn't stop there.
When you think of intercourse, do you think about all types of intercourse and sexual activity that you can engage in? Do you realize that it can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact as well? Did you know that it is possible self-infect? In order to take necessary precaution to protect yourself and your loved ones, you need to be fully aware of the ways you can transmit this disease.
As stated before, the transmission of herpes can occur in various ways. It can even be transmitted when you're not suffering from symptoms. In some cases, symptoms can be so mild, that they go unnoticed. In other cases, the symptoms are noticed, but not recognized as a herpes outbreak.
If you are a carrier of the herpes virus, whether oral or genital, it is important to remember that herpes transmission can occur even during the times when there is no visible outbreak. As a general rule, it is best to avoid skin-to-skin contact with someone when lesions are present. Take necessary precaution between outbreaks as well to keep the virus from spreading. For instance, if you have a visible cold sore, avoid kissing someone, especially children, due to their weaker immune systems. Another way to take precaution is by using a condom during intercourse between outbreaks.

What Is Herpes Simplex Virus and How Is it Diagnosed & Treated?
Herpes simplex virus is responsible for breakouts in the oral and genital region. Simplex 1 generally exhibits symptoms in and around the mouth and face area. The genital type is typically caused by the simplex 2 virus. Individuals infected with either form often experience no or minimal symptoms of the disease, which is one reason why it is so easily transmitted. Most infected persons have no idea that they are infected, and they mistake mild symptoms for other skin disorders.
A common disease in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one of out of five adolescents and adults have had a herpes simplex two virus infection. And the disease is more common in women than in men, with an estimated 1 out of 4 women infected with genital herpes.
The herpes simplex virus is transmitted though contact with an infected person. The herpes virus is present in the sores it can cause on the skin, either in the oral or genital regions, but the disease can be spread even if these sores do not appear to be present. Sometimes an outbreak of herpes simplex causes only a little redness or a mild rash. And in the case of genital herpes, active and highly contagious lesions may be present inside the vagina in women or the urethra in both men and women, and not be visible.

Why Everyone Needs A Blood Test For Herpes
I have herpes, don't you?
You don't?
Are you sure?
I wouldn't be so sure if I were you.
Unless you have had a recent type-specific blood test to test for the presence of herpes simplex antibodies you cannot say with any certainty that you don't have herpes.
You think that only 20% of the population has herpes?
Think again.
You may have heard that one out of every five people has herpes, but that number is untrue and a distortion of the facts. The truth is that at least 60% of the adult population has herpes.
Some people for reasons known only to them decided to exclude people who get herpes above the waist- people who get so-called "cold sores" on their mouths and faces, from the herpes statistics commonly reported in the media, then reporting only the percentage of people who get herpes below the waist- so-called genital herpes. This makes no sense at all since the scientific literature doesn't classify herpes simplex 1 (cold sores) as a different disease as herpes simplex 2 (genital herpes)- but rather as two different types of the same disease which are almost identical genetically, and since many of the new cases of herpes of the genital area are actually caused by people getting herpes simplex 1 on their genitals from oral sex. There really is no such thing as " cold sores" -it is simplex herpes simplex 1 of the mouth or face. And those who have it need not be in denial pretending that it's anything other than herpes simplex. The truth is that you can get herpes simplex 1 on almost any part of your body including your nose, your elbows, your fingers, your stomach, your genitals, your anus, etc. The truth is that herpes simplex is herpes simplex and it is only misleading to not include the people with herpes simplex 1 in herpes statistics.

Herpes - The Most Significant Symptoms
There are many different types or variants of herpes and they all generate some type of eruption or herpes outbreak of sores or lesions.
The herpes family is dominated by two strains in the main. First is the HSV 1 strain that attacks the mouth both inside and out.
Herpes Transmission
The second strain of herpes is herpes simplex 2. This strain affects the parts of the body that are below the waist. This strain is typically spread through sexual contact and causes blisters on the genitalia or the surrounding pubic area. Below we will more specifically get into the types of lesions caused by this virus as well as the location of these sores.
The gentlest member of the herpes family is herpes simplex 1. Despite the fact that it is a gentler virus, the cold sores it is responsible for are highly contagious. There is no cure for HSV 1. Although this herpes is predominantly found around the mouth in the form of cold sores, it often causes herpes on the genitals.
The blisters or sores that sometimes appear in and around the mouth when one is getting a cold or flu are typical of HSV 1. This is called to as oral herpes.
Herpes simplex 2 is the most commonly talked about form of herpes. This strain is passed through sexual activity. The blisters that occur from this strain are similar to cold sores; The herpes virus that causes genital herpes is the virus that raises most concern. HSV 2 causes lesions and blisters on the genitalia and surrounding pubic areas including the buttocks and the anus.

Herpes Support Groups
There are herpes support group's found in certain states in America. There are some herpes support groups in other countries as well. Herpes support groups are very good sources of information and assistance to infected patients. These support groups help a member feel he is not alone in his battle with the disease.
Herpes support groups are helpful both to those who have just been diagnosed with the disease and to long-term herpes patients. Herpes support groups provide a safe and comfortable environment where participants can share their personal experiences about the symptoms and treatment of their oral and/or genital herpes. They get to discuss the severity and duration of their outbreaks, what they do to relieve them of the pain and discomfort and the negative side effects of their therapy. They also get to talk about their fears and how they feel about their condition freely without fear of being judged and condemned. Moreover, they get to contribute advice to fellow members on how to deal with the disease. A really important factor in these herpes support groups is confidentiality as people with herpes are afraid of the social stigma because many in the community look down, judge and even alienate them.

What's the Best Herpes Treatment for You?
There are many herpes treatment options available. If you've already seen your physician about your condition, he or she may have already recommended a medication for you to take. But odds are, you probably wonder if there's something better out there. Today I'm going to share with you your options for herpes treatment.
Typically, when you're first diagnosed as having herpes your physician will suggest a particular herpes treatment product. However, the product your physician may suggest may entirely be based upon nothing more than a clever sales pitch by a pharmaceutical rep. Many health care industry watch dogs believe that doctors end up being nothing more than retail outlets for the pharmaceutical giants. There may indeed be some truth to this charge.
In terms of what kind of herpes treatment is best for you, it will depend on your particular situation. The first type of herpes treatment consists of pharmaceutical drugs; many of which are pills that you take on a daily basis or as a breakout begins.
If you have frequent herpes outbreaks and or you have a partner who doesn't have herpes, your physician may suggest what's called suppressive therapy. Suppressive therapy does what the name implies; it suppresses outbreaks of herpes so your partner doesn't contract this virus. Plus, with suppressive therapy, the number of outbreaks should decrease.

Herpes - The Love Bug 2010
If you're like many of my patients who are old enough to remember when "The Love Bug" (what the media termed the herpes virus), reached near epidemic levels back in the 70's, you may wonder if a cure has been found in the last 40 years or if it's still a problem as a sexually transmitted disease.
Well, no, a cure hasn't been found, and yes, it is still a problem as sexually transmitted diseases go. In fact, some 80 million people in the United States alone have HSV (herpes simplex virus)-2, the "below the waist" type of herpes, a statistic that includes both adults and teenagers between the ages of 14-19!
What you also may not know is that, despite lack of a cure for herpes, there are some natural ways that you can prevail over a herpes infection, perhaps resulting in long-term remission. First, for those of you who are not familiar with what herpes is, how it is transmitted, treated, etc, let me give you the same basic facts that I share with my patients.
What Is An HSV-2 Herpes Infection?
Plain and simple, herpes is a viral infection transmitted by sexual contact with a herpes-infected person. Herpes is transmitted most frequently to another person when the infected person is actively shedding the virus from herpes sore on either their genital region or their mouth.

The Two Types of Herpes
The Herpes disease is one of those sexually transmitted diseases that are considered the most common. Also, this disease is a viral infection that's very common. Once a person develops a cold sore then he or she must have the herpes disease and he/she will have it probably for the rest of his/her life for the simple reason that there is quite no cure that's been discovered at this present time. Also, if a person has contracted the herpes disease, he/she should not think of being alone since there are a lot of people out there --- around 1 in 6 adults in fact, who are also victims of the genital herpes. Furthermore, it has been projected officially that there are around eighty million Americans who have contracted herpes of one particular form or another.
A given fact is that there are about eighty variations of herpes virus that are identified so far, however there are only 8 of the total variations which can be held responsible for such herpes disease in the human population. The herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2 have been the most common of these variations. Some other common viruses of the herpes disease that are able to affect humans may include the shingles (herpes zoster) or the chickenpox (varicella zoster).

How Genital Herpes in Women Differs From That of Men
Women are 4 times more likely to get genital herpes than men. As well, 7 out of 10 women (compared with 4 out of 10 men) have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle pain during an initial outbreak.
Why Women Are At a Greater Risk for Getting Genital Herpes
One reason is the way we're made. Our genital area has a greater number of mucosal cells, that is, cells containing body fluids.
Another reason is our menstrual cycle. It is felt that during this cycle the hormone changes affect our immune system. A lower immune system makes it easier for the herpes simplex virus to cause an infection.
Symptoms of Herpes In Women
Women with herpes suffer some of the same symptoms as as men. An herpes outbreak starts with an itching or tingling feeling in the genital area. This is followed by redness of the skin and then the forming of blisters. These blisters are sore when touched and last longer in women than in men.
The First Genital Herpes Outbreak in Women
The first outbreak of genital herpes is the same for both men and women. However, in women this initial outbreak is more painful and lasts longer that later occurring outbreaks.
Women often suffer more severe complications and have these complications at higher rate during this first outbreak.

Why Herpes Blood Testing?
What's your first reaction when you hear the word herpes? Most of us grimace and recoil at the sound of it, even though many of us have dealt with it in our personal lives. The name herpes can conjure thoughts of visits to STD infested massage parlors or Caligula style orgies, but that's not a very accurate perception of a viral infection that is such a common occurrence in our society.
There are seven different forms of the herpes virus but when discussing herpes as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) we focus on type 1 and type 2. The other five types of herpes cause other illnesses such as the chicken pox or mononucleosis.
Interestingly, many people do not think of herpes 1 as herpes or as an STD. If I mention testing for type 1 herpes they'll say, "You mean cold sores? My Grandma used to get those, I'm not worried about that", or "yeah, my mom and my brother get them, but I don't have it".
The fact is herpes is transmitted through skin to skin contact, at the site of the infection, when the virus is at the surface of the skin, and it is very readily transmittable. It's estimated that over 70 percent of the adult population has type 1 herpes. Most infections are contracted before the age of five by being kissed by a parent or relative.

What Are The Most Effective Herpes Treatment Options?
There are a variety of methods for herpes treatment available to those living with the disease. Many people opt to manage herpes with prescription medications which ultimately limit the number of their outbreaks.
Some of the most popular medications prescribed by doctors today include Zovirax, and Valtrex, both of which are antiviral medications. While these medications provide users with a way to directly attack the herpes virus, they are often accompanied by a variety of unpleasant side effects. Topical creams are another method of herpes treatment, although some creams have been shown to be relatively ineffective in comparison to alternate methods. These options, though popular among men and women who are trying to control their outbreaks, may not be the best answer for those that want a safer and more natural way to conquer the herpes virus.
As an alternative to commercial herpes treatment options, more people are beginning to look at the numerous advantages of natural treatments for herpes. People often discount the effectiveness of natural treatments for herpes due to the lack of public exposure that these options receive. Those that take the time to do minimal amounts of research on natural herpes treatments, and natural antiviral treatments in general, are often surprised at the proven success of these forms of herpes treatment.

Herpes Bumps & Lesions - The Early Warning Signs
The most common manifestation associated with the herpes virus is the development of herpes bumps in the infected area. Many negative thoughts and feelings develop in conjunction with the idea that they, or someone they know, may be infected with the herpes virus.
The idea that herpes lesions will essentially destroy a person's future is untrue. People with any factual knowledge of the condition can safely say that although it is an inconvenience, the effects of herpes are essentially minimal, and most people are able to successfully continue on with their lives, even during outbreaks.
The earliest warning signs of having contracted the herpes virus are the development of herpes bumps on the infected area. These small red bumps usually develop approximately two weeks after a person first comes in contact with the infected area of another person. These primary symptoms soon develop into herpes lesions. The lesions generally ulcerate and scab over. The entire healing process, from the first indication of an outbreak until the final scab completely heals, lasts approximately four weeks.

What Are the Causes of Herpes?
Although the word herpes is tossed around occasionally in general conversation as an insult or a reference to promiscuity, few people are actually aware of the most basic information on herpes. This includes the fact that many people have the virus without even being aware of it.
Herpes is a contagious sexually transmitted disease. Herpes is the general term for two different kinds of herpes simplex viruses: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is usually simply related to sores on the mouth, commonly referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. These sores are found around the nose or mouth and can be passed on through kissing or other intimate physical contact. Beyond this basic information on herpes type 1, in rare cases, HSV-1 blisters can develop on the genitals from oral sex. It can be contracted on the genital area through the medium of fingers or toys.
Basic Information on Herpes states that most cases of genital herpes come from the second type of the virus, HSV-2. Both types of the virus can cause the infected person to have the same lesions (or sores). However, many people that have either strands of the herpes virus may never have any physical symptoms, or they may be so minor and without knowing any basic information on herpes they are dismissed for something as simple as the flu or a skin irritation. Different people may have different reactions the virus, but general initial symptoms may include: a fever, swollen lymph nodes, pain when urinating, lower back pain and/or pain in the genital region in addition to the characteristic sores.
